Burned to bring happiness, kindness, and harmony, sweetgrass is a sacred plant, much like sage, used in purification ceremonies. Unlike sage, which is a shrub, sweetgrass is a type of grass. Traditionally, sage was used to cleanse and protect from negative energies, while sweetgrass, also known as holy grass, vanilla grass, bison grass, or buffalo grass, is believed to symbolize kindness due to its ability to bend, not break, when walked upon in the wild. To some, sweetgrass has a distinct vanilla-like scent, while to others, it may smell like freshly cut hay. The leaves of sweetgrass are strong but delicate, almost hair-like, making it ideal for braiding. This could be why it is also referred to as "the hair of Mother Earth" by indigenous peoples.

Traditionally, sage is burned first for cleansing and purification, followed by sweet grass to attract positive energy and spirits.

Traditional Practices of Smudging

Indigenous cultures view air, water, fire, and earth as integral elements in their ceremonies. While some use abalone shells and others use bowls, both are believed to balance these four elements. The ceremony is led by a Shaman or medicine man, who lights plants in a shell or bowl and uses a feather or fan to spread the smoke. Feathers symbolize air, the shell or bowl represents water, plants embody earth, and fire is represented by the flame. The incorporation of all four elements is vital to these traditions.

Smudging Ceremonies:

When ignited, sweetgrass does not create a hazardous fire; instead, the braided sweetgrass slowly burns while the fragrant smoke is carefully waved or fanned around the space. Following the practices of indigenous cultures, using sweetgrass for purifying ceremonies is ideal for releasing negative energy and welcoming positive vibrations into your life.

For Protection:

When entwined and placed around the neck or displayed in the household, sweetgrass is believed to provide safeguard against adverse energies. The three interlaced strands symbolize affection, serenity and unity, or intellect, physique and soul.

Smudging Your Home With Sweetgrass

1. To begin, speak your intentions aloud or in your thoughts. As you hold the sweetgrass braid, ignite one end and let the embers burn until a fragrant smoke is released.

2.With either your hand or a feather (if you prefer to use a feather, make sure to cleanse it with the smoke beforehand), disperse smoke throughout every room in your home. Begin at the front door and continue clockwise around the house, allowing the smoke to flow into closets and cabinets.

3. Once completed, carefully set the sweetgrass braid on a surface that can withstand heat. Once cooled, store in a secure location.
