Moldavite is a rare green natural glass known as a tektite, formed about 15 million years ago.
It was created when a meteorite struck the Earth in what is now the Nördlinger Ries crater (Germany). The impact melted surrounding rock and ejected it into the atmosphere, where it cooled extremely quickly while falling back to Earth, forming Moldavite.
It is not a mineral or crystal, but an amorphous impact glass, which is why it has no crystal structure and often shows a rough, etched, or sculpted surface.
