Abalone Shells
Abalone shells (known in New Zealand as paua) are often used in smudging rituals. Transform your smudging rituals with the power of the four elements. The abalone shell represents water, smoke represents air, unlit herbs represent earth, and lit herbs represent fire.
When using abalone shells, it is typically for catching ash and embers from burning sage sticks or palo santo sticks, rather than for dried herbs. But if you opt to use a charcoal disc in the shell, make sure to add sand or salt and set it on a heat proof surface before lighting.
Charcoal Burner
Place your burner on a heat-proof surface and fill it with sand or salt. Next, use your charcoal tongs to gently place a burning disc on top of the sand or ash, then add your preferred herbs or resins.
Charcoal
With the use of your charcoal tongs, safely ignite the briquette with a lighter or other fire source. This may result in an energetic spark upon receiving the flame. Let your charcoal burn for several minutes before sprinkling your dried herbs or resin incense on top. Never leave your burning charcoal unattended.
Once your charcoal has cooled, you may pour the ash into a piece of aluminum foil and discard it.
Palo Santo
When burned, palo santo can create a serene, soothing environment that supports both physical and emotional health. This sacred wood is believed to attract positive energy, replenish good vibes, and possess medicinal qualities.
Sage
Many Indigenous cultures believe that the burning of dried sage purges negative energy and brings back balance and peace. Sage is recognized for aiding in spiritual quests, like meditation. Some varieties of sage possess antimicrobial qualities and offer extra advantages.

Resins are natural incenses that do not contain any additives. Resin incense is made from small beads of hardened tree saps such as copal or dammar.
Once your charcoal is safely lit and burning on a heat-proof surface sprinkle your resin incense on top.
Setting Intention
Intention means you have a plan or a direction in what you are doing. In other words, you have a purpose and an aim for doing your smudge. For example “Please remove any negative or unwanted energy from this space. May all negativity be dispelled forever. May this space and I be filled with love, light, happiness, and protection.”
